I celebrated my first business anniversary this month, and I have to tell you I didn’t feel the way I expected to feel.
To be completely transparent, I’ve felt a bit lost and unsure of where I want to go from here and how I want to take my business from adolescence to adulthood.
I’ve been going through what I call entrepreneurial puberty, and based on a few no-holds-barred conversations with my biz besties I’m not alone.
If you’re going through entrepreneurial puberty, here’s what may be going on in that pretty little head of yours right now:
#1 You feel guilty for not being head-over-heels in love with your business anymore.
The way you usually make money now feels like pulling teeth, and even though you need it you can’t be assed to make any new offers. In some ways, you feel like you’ve outgrown your business and it no longer feels aligned with the person you’ve become.
#2 The way you usually market your services feels meh and completely uninspired.
Facebook communities used to be your jam and now you’d rather stick needles in your eyes than post 3x/day and follow a social media marketing plan. Or maybe you’re just bored with the way you’ve been showing up and you’re ready to have some real FUN in your business.
Either way, you know deep down it’s not the strategy you hate but the way you’re working that strategy. You’re sick and tired of the same ol’ shit online. You want to do it differently.
#3 You’re done with being told what to do and how to do it.
Over it. Done. Finito.
You finally feel like you’re ready to run your business (and your life) on your terms. No more putting everyone else’s business model on a pedestal. No more buying all. the. courses. and looking outside of yourself for all the answers.
#4 All you want to do is sleep, reflect, write, and emote.
You’re feeling fragile, because you really don’t know what you want. All you know for sure is what you don’t want. You spend your days sleeping, reflecting, journaling, and banging your head against the wall searching for the ONE thing that will give you your spark back. You don’t want to move forward until you’re pretty damn clear on your Purpose and why you’re even doing this. Your stubborn about this. Nothing moves forward until you feel grounded again.
#5 Things that used to terrify you seem like the next logical step.
You’re all grown up now. The entrepreneurial milestones and opportunities you used to say were too big for you are now staring you in the face as if to say, “Hi there, nice to meet you. I’m your Purpose.” The thought of writing a book, speaking on stage, running your first retreat, investing big in a new certification or mentorship program, and/or launching your first signature program feels really damn exciting. Still a tad scary but mostly exciting.
#6 You feel awkward as f***.
You’re doing things you’ve never done before and connecting with people you thought were way beyond you. You're walking on Bambi legs as my former client Courtney used to say, and it basically feels like Freshman year of high school all over again. Welcome to up-leveling. <3
#7 Your friends and family keep asking you, “what is up with you lately?”
Yeah you’re moody, and it’s not just the full moon. Your emotions are up and down. You aren’t as chatty with your biz besties. Maybe you’re crying at the drop of a hat. You may also be outgrowing old relationships that no longer serve you.
#8 You have an intense desire to get organized and start over with a fresh clean slate.
This is almost like the nesting period that pregnant women experience. You want everything lined up with your finances, taxes, space, and marketing efforts. Maybe you’ve procrastinated on having systems before, but now you’re ready to take yourself and your business seriously.
#9 On one hand everything feels like it’s falling apart, and on the other you can feel something big is on its way.
At the end of the day, you realize nothing is wrong with you; you’re just growing up. You’re seeing the big picture more clearly. You're ready to swap just making it by for building an empire and making a bigger impact than ever before.
Maybe you identify with just a few of these or uh… all of them. Either way, it’s important to know that your beautiful business baby isn’t going to burst into flames.
However, this is not a time to play small or shrink. It’s a time to feel into the frustration, knowing that the breakthrough you seek is around the corner waiting for you. Also know that feeling this way is a good sign. It means you’re meant for far more than a mediocre life and business.
You’ve got shit to do and people to serve, hon.
So take some time for yourself to get clear on your next direction without the shame and guilt.
Let it go. You’re most definitely not alone!
