Two years ago I didn't even know what a money block was, let alone how to deal with one. It wasn't until I took a group coaching course that I was introduced to the term, and I finally began to understand why I felt so icky about money.
As someone who was raised by a single mom with two kids trying to make ends meet, I had a lot of resentment and shame around money. Limiting beliefs such as "I need to work hard to earn money," or "being poor makes me a better person" or "there is never enough money" kept me in a holding pattern for years working as a health coach making just enough to get by each month.
Learning about my own money story helped me finally connect the dots between why I felt guilty about doing work I loved and getting paid well for it. Once I understood that my relationship with money could be healed and that I didn't have to inherit my family's beliefs about wealth - everything changed.
It finally felt safe to want more, and I didn't have so much fear that money would disappear once I got it. I invested in myself and my business. I followed my heart and moved abroad, and I stopped saving the best for last in every area of my life. I realized that I didn't have to be afraid of money anymore and that I could trust it would show up when I needed it as long as I took inspired action.
I want the same for you too!
While I can’t make your money blocks disappear just by reading this blog post, I can help you see your blocks in a new, more empowering light. Because money blocks aren’t so bad once you understand them and know what to do about them.
As promised, here are 4 empowering truths about money blocks:
#1 They’re never really about money
Take a closer look at just about any so-called “money block” and you’ll see that below the surface it stems from something else entirely. Money blocks show up when we feel unworthy of something we want. So the real question is, “why do we feel unworthy?”
It’s not always a simple answer, but it can be found if you look in the right places. Up close money blocks are really just symptoms of guilt, shame, and/or rejection carried in your subconscious mind and energy system.
Here’s a common example:
Imagine as a freshman college student you racked up a ton of credit card debt on things you didn’t really need. You spent years scrimping and saving so you could pay it all off, and now you’re super responsible with how you spend your money. However, subconsciously a part of you still feels you can’t be trusted with money. Before you know it, you’re self-sabotaging every opportunity to make real money that comes your way. You procrastinate on launching a program you know would create more profit and help a lot of people. You feel scared shitless to invest in yourself- because what if you can't make the money back? No matter what you do, you make the same amount each month or you make more only to make substantially less the next month.
You don’t realize it right away, but your subconscious mind has based all of your future exchanges with money on irresponsible behavior you exhibited in your teens. If that isn’t crazy, I don’t know what is.
But there is good news here, I promise.
When you know that a money block isn’t really a money block, your subconscious can’t take you for a ride as easily. When you discover a new block, rather than spiraling into freak-out mode, you can decide to become curious instead. You can ask questions and dig deeper until you get to the root of what you’re really afraid of. Your subconscious mind cannot withstand conscious awareness.
Once you know why you feel unworthy of more money and abundance, you can work on that issue directly. No more running around in circles or telling yourself, “whelp I guess I just have money blocks! Nothing I can do about that!”
Victimhood mentality be gone.
#2 Everybody has them
No matter how many women I’ve worked with it never ceases to astonish me how often I hear the phrase, “is it weird that I feel x, y, or z about money?” Trust me when I say - having money blocks doesn't make you weird. If you have a subconscious mind, you have money blocks.
My first coach used to say all the time, "what's personal is universal," and I find this to be true when it comes to money blocks. The circumstances of how you got the block may be different, but the root is nearly always the same.
At the heart of all money blocks is the fear of not being enough or not being worthy. No matter what our goals are, we really just want to be loved and accepted for who we are.
Every successful woman you look up to has money blocks. And you know how they became successful anyway? They consistently work on healing their blocks every time they reach a new self-imposed limit. You can do this too.
#3 They reveal what you really want
One thing I actually love about discovering a new money block is that it teaches me things about myself and my true desires. During a recent coaching call with my mentor I discovered my newest block. Part of me is terrified of being a more “grown-up” entrepreneur and having a long-term strategy because it means taking myself more seriously. When I dig deeper, I discover that I’m ultimately afraid I’ll let others down and will be met with criticism which in my subconscious mind equals rejection and isolation.
So what does this tell me? It tells me that I value being seen as a great leader, that I want to inspire others with what I create, and that it's important to me to add value and do so with integrity. It also shows me that prioritizing connections with friends outside of my work and being active in my local community would help me feel more supported and less fearful of rejection.
See how I did that? I just re-framed my fears into desires. What you’re afraid of is often a disguise for what you really want. Try it for yourself - it really works!
#4 You can heal them as they show up
Intention to heal is everything. I can’t say that enough. In fact, if you dig around on my site you’ll see I’ve said that same phrase over and over again.
Money blocks can be annoying, yes, but they can also be healed when you’re ready to let them go. When your desire to transform and grow exceeds your desire for things to stay as they are it’s healing time.
Healing looks different depending on the person and/or the circumstances. Sometimes deep awareness of your blocks and committing to taking inspired action towards your goals (facing your biggest fears in the process) is enough to do the trick. Other times you may need to go straight to the source of the block for healing- the energy system.
As an Energy Editing® Professional, I test for the specific limiting thoughts, beliefs, fears, and emotional states holding you back and show you how to permanently heal them in minutes. Interested? I’d love to see you at my monthly Heal Your Money Blocks group sessions!
As you can see money blocks are just an opportunity to dig deeper, understand yourself better, and commit to expanding regardless of the temporary discomfort you feel. You don't have to dim your light in order to fit in. You aren't here to fit in - you are here to be yourself and share the gifts you feel called to share with the world.
Now go get'em tiger!
